The FIA Formula One World Championship is the leading event in the auto racing world. The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is the exciting final race, which takes place at the Yas Marina Circuit on Yas Island, just 30 minutes outside of Abu Dhabi city. Thousands of people, from racing enthusiasts to families seeking a unique vacation experience, flock to Abu Dhabi for the event each year.
For accommodations off the island, check out the Al Zahiya area. There's the Southern Sun Abu Dhabi Hotel on Mina Street, which is known for its excellent customer service, or the Jannah Burj Al Sarab, which is also on Mina and is a very family-friendly place to stay.
If you do decide to stay in Abu Dhabi and commute to Yas Island, there are plenty of transportation options available to you. Rent a car and use the Ghweifat International Highway (E11). You could also take the public bus 190 from Abu Dhabi to Yas Island at the Zayed City Station, which is near the Al Wahda Mall. To catch the bus back to Abu Dhabi from Yas Island, head to Yas Island Marina Station, which is near the circuit.
There is no shortage of things to do in between racing events while you're on Yas Island. For some shopping and family-friendly entertainment, check out the Yas Mall on Yas West, which has several high end stores, restaurants, fun places for kids, and a cinema. For a unique, adrenaline filled experience, make sure you visit the Ferrari World theme park. Accessible from Yas Mall, Ferrari World is the world’s largest indoor theme park and features the fastest roller coaster - the Formula Rossa.
Yas Waterworld on Yas Leisure Drive is a large water theme park with plenty to do for both adults and children, boasting more than 40 slides. Make sure you pack comfortable clothing and ample supplies of sunscreen for this experience. Also on Yas Leisure Drive is the Yas Links Golf Course; ideal if you’re looking to enjoy a relaxing round of golf.
Concerts are aplenty when F1 comes to town, with Enrique Iglesias, Florence The Machine and Blur all putting on post-race shows. Arabic stars J Said Mrad, Fares Karam, Aryam and Cheb Khaled will kick off the after-race shows together on November 26.
With Abu Dhabi city being a stone’s throw away from Yas Island, make sure you visit the stunning Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque on Sheikh Rashid Road and take one of the free guided tours.
Enjoy a delicious meal or a refreshing drink as you admire breathtaking views of Abu Dhabi on the Corniche Road. The Observation Deck at 300 is a good spot to have some refreshments and is located within the modern Jumeirah at Etihad Towers.
