Azerbaijan lies on the Caspian Sea. Its capital Baku is a UNESCO world heritage site. The old city of Baku is well worth a visit for a walk down Azerbaijan’s history. Visit the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a remarkable example of 15th century Azeri architecture. The grounds of this significant site include the main palace building, the Divankhana stone pavilion and the shah’s mosque. Also in Baku, is the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, an icon of Azerbaijan’s modern architecture designed by world-renowned architect Zaha Hadid. The centre comprises an auditorium, a gallery and a museum offering visitors information about the country’s history and cultural evolution.
